Courses

I teach doctoral students at our community-based mental health training clinic, covering a range of topics that relate to psychologists as clinicians.  Each year I also run a student supervision program at the clinic, teaching advanced doctoral students supervision models and overseeing their supervision of more junior students.

Research

I work closely with my colleague, Dr. Ben Freer, to study stigma, shame, trauma, and loss as they relate to attitudes about psychological distress, mental health treatment, and those who seek and/or utilize mental health services.  We have also focused on the transition of veterans and their families from military service to civilian life.

In addition, since we are both involved in establishing new programs at the University, we also engage in program evaluation research.

Academic Profile

I am a member of the clinical psychology doctoral faculty and full-time director of our community-based, in-house training clinic for both school and clinical psychology doctoral students, where we provide mental health services to children and adults from the NJ/NY area.  I joined the University in 2005 after having worked for many years delivering mental health services to a variety of patient populations across numerous settings.

My clinical interests and areas of focus include grief and loss, trauma, and work with military veterans and their families. In the past, I have held positions focusing on health psychology as well as emergency psychiatry and crisis intervention, and I continue to enjoy those areas as well.

I conceptualize psychological distress/psychopathology from a psychodynamic/integrative orientation but practice other approaches as well if needed.
