Academic Profile
Nela joined FDU in 2015, teaching Academic Writing and Academic Research Foundations in the master’s program. She earned her BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, an MA in philology from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. Before coming to FDU, Nela taught Preparation in Academic Skills in English at Simon Fraser University; various ESL courses, including upper-intermediate and advanced general ESL, TOEFL preparation, and business English, at the Immigrant Services Society of BC; and text analysis, translation, and English for students of medicine at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. While an adjunct lecturer at FDU, Nela also taught Academic Writing at BCIT part-time for a few terms. She has participated in and co-developed a few curricula, the most significant being Enhanced English Language Skills for Foreign-Trained Architects curriculum and material development for the Provincial Government of British Columbia.
Besides teaching, Nela’s other vocation and passion are translating and interpreting, which she has been doing for as long as she has been teaching.
Her research interests are linguistics, especially language contact, and second language acquisition and teaching.
