Academic Profile
Dr. Bachman (he/they) serves in the role of Interim Director of the International School of Hospitality, Sports, & Tourism Management (ISHSTM) at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). In this role, he is responsible for the operations of ISHSTM at all FDU campuses globally. He is based out of FDU’s Vancouver, Canada campus and frequently travels to FDU’s campuses in Teaneck and Madison, New Jersey.
In addition to his role as Interim Director, he has been appointed as a Scholar-in-Residence at Destination BC where he works on research and strategy projects involving resident perceptions of tourism, tourism marketing, employee engagement, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).
Within industry, Dr. Bachman sits on the Industry Advisory Council of the BC Hospitality Foundation, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Reconciliation (DEIR) Committee of the Tourism Industry Association of BC, and Advisory Committee for the School of Hospitality & Tourism at Selkirk College.
Dr. Bachman received his Ph.D. in Tourism Management from Clemson University, Master of Natural Resources in Natural Resource Recreation & Tourism, Master of Education in Sport Management, and Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Geography degrees from the University of Georgia.
His previous and current research includes using quantitative and qualitative methodologies to study resident perceptions of tourism, event sustainability, festivals and events, LGBT2Q+ tourism, craft beer tourism, wine tourism, sustainable coastal tourism development, and marketing.
Prior to becoming a University Professor, Dr. Bachman co-founded Looking Glass Strategic Research Consultants, a research and consulting firm in the tourism and hospitality industry. Dr. Bachman has also worked in professional golf event management, university athletics, and ski resort recreation in various roles. He is an avid traveler, hiker, Nordic skier, and sports fan. He completed the 2,178-mile Appalachian Trail in five months in 2008 and can be found hiking/skiing the trails in the greater Vancouver area, traveling to one of the beautiful towns around BC, or attending a festival or event in the local area.
