Academic Profile
Jaime Buenahora has been involved in the academic world for over 35 years, teaching, researching, and authoring many articles and several books related to Political Science and Constitutional Law: namely, The Constituent Process, Democracy in Colombia, Electoral Processes, and The Common Good.
He joined the full-time faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University in September 2007 after relinquishing his duties as Consul General of Colombia in NYC where he served from 2002 to 2007. Previously, he was an Adjunct Professor at the School of Administrative Science, Fairleigh Dickinson University.
He is currently working as Clinical Professor for the School of Public and Global Affairs SPGA. He teaches a variety of graduate courses related to UN Issues, World Economy and Globalization, International Law, Ethics and Human Rights, Comparative Political Systems, Leadership, and Government. Besides his graduate courses, he also teaches some undergraduate and core courses, such as Global Issues, Cross Cultural Perspectives, and Latin America and Global International Trade.
Jaime Buenahora earned his Juris Doctor degree and a specialization in Economics from Javeriana University in Bogota. He also obtained a master’s degree in Sociology of Law as well as in Political Science at Université de La Sorbonne, in Paris. He also has a Doctoral Degree in Comparative Public Law from the same French educational institution. His thesis was on Transitional Justice in Colombia, following the peace process signed between the former guerrilla FARC-EP and the Colombian government.
Prior to being Clinical Professor at FDU, he held various positions in the Colombian public sector, such as Vice Minister of Government, Congressman (House of Representatives), Magistrate of the Judiciary Council, Secretary of Government in Bogota, and Consul General of Colombia in NYC.
