“As a first-generation college student and immigrant, I understand the unique challenges and aspirations that come with this journey. I remember the uncertainty, the questions that lingered in my mind, and the desire for a space where I could belong,” said Eleni Mylonas, lecturer of college writing and the center’s director. “This center embodies that hope — a place where first-generation scholars can find support, resources, and a community that celebrates their unique stories and achievements.”

The event included a tour of the center and a reception. The FDU Center for First-Generation Scholars hopes to foster resilience, ambition, and academic excellence in students and play a vital role in shaping their success.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our University’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success. More than 25% of all our degree-seeking undergraduates at the Metropolitan Campus are first-generation students and nearly 33% of all our associate degree students are first-generation students,” said Rifkin at the event.

“At FDU, we recognize the unique challenges that first-generation students often face. Many of you are trailblazers in your families, navigating the complexities of higher education without a roadmap. Your courage, determination, and resilience inspire us all.”
