Meet the new faculty in the School of Psychology and Counseling
Say ‘hello’ to the new faculty members in the School of Psychology and Counseling!
FDU: What’s the most interesting thing that you’ve learned recently?
Marc Diener: I learned about the pedagogy of kindness, a concept articulated in a book by that name authored by Catherine Denial. The concept struck me, and I do my best to internalize its message.
FDU: Who was your favorite teacher when you were a student?
MD: My favorite teacher in school was a talented scholar, clinician, and researcher who served as my dissertation advisor, mentor, and supervisor. He synthesized all of these different aspects, and that is quite rare to find in one person. I still maintain an active relationship with him, which I appreciate and for which I am grateful.
FDU: What brought you to FDU?
MD: A number of things. I was impressed with the scholarship of the faculty, the quality of the students, the small class sizes, and the quality of the relationship between the administration and faculty. So far, I am really enjoying it here, and I look forward to continuing to do so.
FDU: What excites you the most about clinical mental health counseling?
Yuqing Qiu: My experience working as a mental health counselor has fostered my sensitivity to racial stereotypes and racial discrimination in counseling and counselor education. It provides me with a broad perspective on counselor education, enhancing my research methodology and passion for student engagement. I am excited to combine my experiences with teaching to strengthen counseling education for students with various racial backgrounds.
FDU: What bucket list item do you most want to check off in the next year?
YQ: I want to continue building on my research and teaching agenda. I want to explore the area more. I want to enjoy more time with my family.
FDU: What brought you to FDU?
YQ: I lived in New Jersey for three years during my husband’s undergraduate studies. The memory of N.J., the diverse community, and the friendly environment of FDU attracted me.
FDU: Who is one person, dead or alive, that you wish you could meet? Why?
Alan Sheinfil: Family, heritage, and history play important roles in my life. It would be meaningful to be able to meet my paternal great-great-grandfather. I have so many questions about his experiences and journey. Learning more about him and the ways in which he successfully instilled values in future generations would enrich my perspective on fostering resilience and perseverance.
FDU: What is your favorite film or television series, and why?
AS: This is always a challenging question to answer, but if I am forced to choose just one, I have to go with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Finding ways to laugh about mundane day-to-day occurrences strongly resonates with my sense of humor, and nobody does that better than Larry David. His ability to surprise the audience by weaving together multiple storylines and finding a way to neatly tie them together is incredible.
FDU: What brought you to FDU?
AS: As a Teaneck native, I have always been aware of FDU’s positive influence on our local community. The opportunity to take the next step in my professional academic career as a member of such an excellent institution is an honor. FDU’s strong commitment to students and its dedication to facilitating their success makes this the perfect environment for me. It was a no-brainer to join a team of accomplished educators, researchers, and clinicians. Contributing to FDU’s mission, and the community I affectionately call home, is a privilege.
FDU: What’s your favorite way to decompress after a long day of work?
Sharron Spriggs: After a long day of work, I enjoy being with my two daughters and husband. They provide me joy outside of work. We look forward to pizza Fridays.
FDU: What is your favorite season, and why?
SS: I enjoy fall. I love fall fashion and the fresh air. I was also born in September so there’s some bias there!
FDU: What brought you to FDU?
SS: I am a graduate of the PhD program in clinical psychology. I am forever grateful for my training in the program, and I am now delighted to be part of the growing faculty.
