FDU Hispanic Center Themes
In the twenty years since Puerta Al Futuro became the first successful model of the Hispanic Center family of programs, four themes have been applied again and again as FDU opened gateways to academic and career success:
Make academic progress simultaneously with progress in English
At the Hispanic Center the academic goal doesn’t have to wait for English fluency. The students learn and refine their English while earning credits toward their academic credentials.
Don’t become an Hispanic Island on an English campus
Because Hispanic Center programs are serving multiple age ranges and all levels of English fluency from beginner to proficient, there are role models, project partners, teachers, club and sports team members, and alumni networks for every Hispanic Center student.
Reach the students through the parents; reach the parents through the students
Make bi-lingual proficiency a positive career advantage, not just a problem to be solved
Bi-lingual employees are key for successful employers in important regions of the U.S., including New Jersey. Whether in health care, information sciences, or service industries, bi-lingual fluency is a jewel on a resume.
