The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution urges faculty and students to familiarize themselves with “fair use” guidelines and reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. For further information, please refer to the US Copyright Office website.

Credit Hours

  • Credit Hour Definition – The University’s calculation of credit hours for all credit-bearing courses and degree programs follow rules established by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education, which are consistent with the U.S. Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. Section 9A:1–1.2 of the New Jersey Administrative Code provides that “Semester credit hour” means 50 minutes of face-to-face class activity each week for 15 weeks (or the equivalent attained by scheduling more minutes of face-to-face class activity per week for fewer weeks in the semester) in one semester complemented by at least 100 minutes each week of laboratory or outside assignments (or the equivalent thereof for semesters of different length).
    • Course or program review procedures and sample approval documentation, as they relate to credit hour
    • Process the institution utilizes to verify length of academic period and compliance with credit hour requirements through course scheduling

    • Undergraduate – Transfer students will have completed 24 or more college-credit hours at an accredited post-secondary institution.  Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be submitted.  A high school transcript need not be submitted unless requested by the admissions office.  Applicants with less than 24 credits earned are considered students with advanced standing, and must submit their official high school transcript and SAT or ACT test scores in addition to college transcripts.  For Additional Information please see the University Bulletin.
    • Graduate – Graduate credits earned at another accredited institution may be accepted in transfer, in accordance with the curricular requirements of the degree program and the academic policies of the colleges. Generally, transfer credit will be considered for those courses completed within the last five years in which a grade of B or better has been earned. A maximum of nine credits may be accepted in transfer.  For Additional Information please see the University Bulletin.
    • Veterans – Veterans may be able to receive FDU credit for military educational experiences. FDU uses the American Council on Education (ACE) Credit Recommendations to help award credits for these experiences. Each academic program at FDU makes independent judgments about military educational transcripts and college transcripts. The number of credits awarded will vary depending upon your specific educational experiences and your choice of major.  For additional information review the Veteran Transcripts and Credits page or visit the Office of Veteran Affairs.
