Robert Alfano, BS, MS’64 (Metro), a distinguished professor of physics and electrical engineering, science and engineering at The City College of New York, received the IEEE Photonics Society Laser Instrumentation Award “for the discovery of supercontinuum light source as an enabling technology for diverse applications and tunable Cr4 and Cr3 lasers.” He has published more than 700 articles, has 133 patents, has raised $63 million in research funding and has mentored 59 PhD students.

Howard Rossman, MBA (Metro), graduated from McGill University in 1961 with a degree in chemical engineering and worked at DuPont from 1961-69. DuPont allowed him to earn an MBA at FDU. From 1968 to 1982, he owned an executive recruitment firm and was also an engineer and scientist. In 1982, he purchased a travel agency, which he managed until 2016. He is retired now, and is proud to have achieved success in three different careers.

Eric Kaplan, BS (Flor), is the author of the Amazon bestseller 1 Minute Motivator, published by JETLAUNCH in 2020, as well as books on health and wellness. The former owner of five chiropractic practices and CEO of Disc Centers of America, Kaplan became the president and COO of Complete Wellness Centers, acquiring and running Nutrisystem. Combining his medical, lifestyle and motivational experience, he started Concierge Coaches. Kaplan received FDU’s PINNACLE Award in 2019.

Carla-Maria Süllwold, MA (Metro), is a journalist, critic and author. Her theater, film, music and visual arts reviews have appeared in Fanfare Magazine and Talkin’ Broadway. Süllwold is also the author of the novels Raising Rufus: A Maine Love Story and The Whaler’s Bride and three collections of short stories: BOOKENDS Stories of Love, Loss and Renewal; CAROUSEL and Other Stories; and Round Trip: Ten Stories.
Frank Arena, BS (Ruth), has been named Belleville (N.J.) Italian Man of the Year and was recognized at a dinner ahead of the 42nd Nutley-Belleville Italian Heritage Parade. A podiatrist, he established Arena Family Foot Care at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, where he is also the founder and chief of the hospital’s Wound Care Center.
Leslie Hirsch, MPA (Ruth), was elected to the American Hospital Association’s board of trustees for a three-year term effective January 2025. He is president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick, N.J.

Alan Burghard, BA (Flor), is in Marquis Who’s Who for his contribution to the entertainment field. He is president of Reel Action Advisors, Inc., established in 2015, to support film and video projects and to provide training to production companies, actors, writers and executive staff. Burghard was an associate producer and technical adviser for seasons four through 14 of the TV show “NCIS: Los Angeles,” drawing on his experience as a former special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
Jeff Van Drew, DMD (Metro), was reelected to New Jersey’s Second Congressional District for a fourth term. He first served on the Dennis (N.J.) Township Committee and then was mayor from 1994 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2003. In 2002, Van Drew represented the First Legislative District in the N.J. General Assembly. He represented the same district in the N.J. Senate from 2008 to 2018.

Gerald Romano, BA (Ruth), plays the trumpet for Total Soul and has performed professionally with the band for 21 years and with The Happenings for 20 years. Romano retired as director of bands at Monmouth Regional High School in Tinton Falls, N.J., and was an adjunct instructor at Brookdale Community College, Middletown, N.J.

Gene Valicenti, BA (Metro), co-anchor for NBC 10 News at 6, was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. He hosts “10 News Conference” and “The News with Gene Valicenti” on WPRO 99.7 FM. A five-time Emmy winner for anchoring and reporting, Valicenti has also won Edward R. Murrow awards for journalism.

Richard Kender, MBA (Metro), was elected to the board of directors of Omega Therapeutics, Inc.,
Cambridge, Mass. He was at Merck & Co., Inc. for 35 years, and served as senior vice president, business development and corporate licensing prior to his retirement in 2013.
Richard Matthews, BS (Metro), MBA’94 (Ruth), was appointed as business administrator of the Ridgewood (N.J.) Public Schools District. He served in the same capacity at the Paterson (N.J.) Public Schools for seven years.

Fadzillah Abdullah, BSEE (Metro), was appointed as an independent and non-executive director of Capitol A Berhad, a Malaysian multinational airline group. She retireed from the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) in October 2024 with the rank of brigadier general. She was the first female pilot in the RMAF. She was a specialist officer at the Electronic Welfare Center; director of air capability, plans and procurement and director general of the defense training department.
Susan Chiusano, BS (Metro), is a test kitchen manager at First for Women magazine. She attended culinary school after FDU and her first job was in a classical French pastry shop.
Savas Tsivicos, BS (Ruth), MBA’96 (Metro), received the Aristotelian Award at the 33rd Hermes Expo Awards Dinner and Gala, for his contributions and dedication to the Greek American and Cypriot communities. He is CEO of Cypreco Industries, Inc., a general contracting, construction management and consulting company in Neptune, N.J.

Doreen McSharry, AS’87, BS (Metro), celebrated 30 years working in health care leadership. She is director, safety/infection prevention, at Hackensack Meridian Health – Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, N.J. She writes, “I never could have accomplished my goals without FDU.” McSharry has been married to Frank Kapusinski for 23 years. Their 21-year-old daughter, Margot, spent summers at FDU’s Camp Discovery.

She is the president and CEO of Inroads to Opportunities, a nonprofit in Union County, N.J., that provides programs and services to individuals with disabilities.
Jean-Marie Addeo Levantine, BS (Ruth), is the senior director of NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Garden City in New York. A health care executive with more than 30 years’ experience, she previously served as the regional director of ambulatory operations at NYU Langone Health.

Vincent Lombardo, MPA (Ruth), was appointed to the board of trustees of Hudson County Community College, Jersey City, N.J. He is the executive director, Office of Corporate Engagement, at NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering.
Amit Rastogi, BS (Metro), president and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center, in Jupiter, Fla., was appointed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to the Health Care Innovation Council. Rastogi was named one of Florida’s 500 Most Influential Business Leaders in 2024 by Florida Trend and was a finalist for Modern Healthcare Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022.

Michael Lapidow, BA (Flor), joined ApTask, a global staffing firm headquartered in Iselin, N.J. He is developing ApTask’s specialization in IT, infrastructure, technology and power-supporting technology staffing.
Marc Medley, MA (Flor), is in Marquis Who’s Who for his contributions to education as school principal of the Young Men’s Leadership Academy in Paterson, N.J. Medley hosts “The Reading Circle with Marc Medley” on WPSC 88.7 FM.
“Strays,” a short film by James Rana, BA (Metro), an award-winning actor/ playwright and adjunct instructor at FDU, screened at the 19th Annual Teaneck International Film Festival in November 2024. “Strays” is the story of a Pakistani immigrant, played by Rana, living alone in Coney Island until a stray cat enters his life. A talkback post-screening featured Rana and producer Jane Kotlyar.

Martin Binks, MA, PhD’02 (Metro), was appointed chair of the department of nutrition and food studies at the George Mason University College of Public Health. He was previously a professor in the department of nutritional sciences at Texas Tech University (TTU), where he was chair of the TTU Institutional Review Board and founding director of TTU’s nutrition and metabolic health initiative.
Alexander Cole, BA, MA’02, MBA’04 (Metro), was appointed head coach of the Knights men’s and women’s tennis teams. He owns Little Heroes Tennis, an academy he started in 2009. Cole also works with the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and is a lead faculty coach for youth players in N.J. While playing for the Knights, he never lost a home match, was a two-year team captain and had the highest GPA among graduating student-athletes. He was elected to the FDU DI Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 — the first tennis player to receive the honor.
Maria Ferrara, BS (Ruth), executive assistant to the board of trustees at Bergen Community College (BCC), Paramus, N.J., received the “Professional Board Staff Member – Northeast Region” Award. Ferrara joined BCC in 2013 and has led the college’s “Souper Bowl” food drive and the first “Black Women’s Maternal Health Summit.” In 2023, she received the Bergen Italian American Heritage Month Outstanding Community Service Award.

William Timony, BS (Flor), was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Hall of Fame as part of its class of 2024. As a basketball player at FDU, he led the Devils in scoring for three straight seasons and ranks fourth all-time in scoring in program history with 1,812 points. Timony was also inducted into the FDU Devils Hall of Fame.

Dawn Barone, MA (Flor), was elected to Wagner College’s Alumni Association board of directors for the 2024–2025 academic year. She graduated from Wagner in 1994 with a BS in business administration. Barone is vice president of employee relations at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York City.

Charles Davis, II, BS, MBA’04 (Metro), is CEO of the Henry J. Austin Health Center in Trenton, N.J. He served as chair of HJAHC’s board of directors from 2014-’24. Previously, he worked in N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration on enhancing operations and customer service at the N.J. Motor Vehicle Commission. At FDU, he was assistant director of University admissions and director of the Enhanced Freshman Experience program.

Nicholas DiPillo, BA (Metro), has been named head women’s basketball coach at Le Moyne College, Syracuse, N.Y. Previously, he was assistant women’s basketball coach at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and spent five years with the New York Liberty in the Women’s National Basketball Association.
Alternative Facts: God Bless the USA Patriotic Edition, a book by Frederick Springer III, BA, MBA’05 (Flor), was published by Amazon in April 2024. The book chronicles the downward spiral of a dystopian society via slice-of-life vignettes.

Katie Singer, MFA (Flor), faculty associate, humanities/arts/cultural studies, Arizona State University, Phoenix, Ariz., is author of Alien Soul: Oral Histories of Great Migration Newark, published by Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, N.J., in August 2024. Using interviews in the Krueger- Scott African-American Oral History Collection, Singer interrogates themes including the Black church, labor issues, women’s activism and the 1967 rebellion. She and Maurice Tyree cowrote The Darkest Parts of My Blackness: A Journey of Remorse, Reform, Reconciliation and (R)evolution, published by Lived Places Publishing in August 2024. The book details Tyree’s incarceration and transformation based on his letters and poems.

Victoria Hosendorf, BS (Metro), executive vice president of The Enterprise Center, Philadelphia, Pa., was honored in Business Journal’s 2024 Women of Influence. She spearheaded the center’s expansion into Camden and Newark — enabling job creation and helping clients secure nearly $350 million in contracts. The Enterprise Center supports small businesses to ensure they receive jobs on major infrastructure projects.
The Same Bright Stars, the latest novel by Ethan Joella, MFA (Flor), was published in July 2024 by Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Booklist lauded his “eye and ear for suburban pathos” and Bookpage said, “Joella’s characters are as real as they come.” Joella is an adjunct instructor at FDU.
Jessica Petrie Rapp, MBA (Flor), MAS’19 (Metro), was appointed school business administrator/board secretary for the Livingston (N.J.) Public Schools District. She was previously with the Lakeland Regional High School District.

Smith facilitated the Women’s Entrepreneurship Center StartUP Program, providing women with the skills to start their own businesses.

Sean Baptiste, BS (Metro), was appointed chief people officer at Nemours Children’s Health, where he will foster and maintain a culture of wellness within the organization. Nemours Children’s is one of the largest integrated pediatric health systems in the nation. Baptiste was previously vice president of talent and innovation at RWJBarnabas Health.

Alice Campos-Zanghi, MAS (Metro), was elected to the Hazlet (N.J.) Township Committee. She is president of the board for the Hazlet Business Owners Association and helps operate Force Plumbing and Heating LLC, her family’s small business. Campos-Zanghi has been a litigation and corporate paralegal for more than 15 years.
Alyssa Kitchen, BS (Metro), is the first female general manager of The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. The theater, which opened in 1926, has hosted the Grateful Dead, Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones. Prior to joining The Capitol Theatre in 2015 as director of accounting, she was a senior accountant at Relix Magazine.

John Russo, BA, MAS’18 (Metro), chief of the Rutherford (N.J.) Police Department, was sworn in as the 109th head of the N.J. State Association of Chiefs of Police at the chiefs’ 112th Annual Training Conference and Police/Security Expo in Atlantic City, N.J. He aims “to give the police chiefs a greater voice in legislative affairs and ensure their position is considered when proposed laws are discussed.”

Janelle Hall, MPA (Metro), conducted a Lead with Impact Workshop in November 2024 at the Metropolitan Campus. FDU Women in Business hosted. Hall is executive director at United Passaic Organization, a nonprofit providing food and rentals to those in need in Passaic, N.J.

Letisia Cruz, MFA (Flor), wrote Bigwig’s Illustrated Guide to Birds, a poetry book, published by Tolsun Publishing, Inc., Glendale, Ariz., in 2023. Her other books are Migrations & Other Exiles and The Lost Girls Book of Divination.
Joseph Knight, BS (Metro), owns the IHOP franchise at The Shops at Park Village, in Congress Heights in Washington, D.C. He worked at IHOP during high school and college. Knight became manager of multi-unit restaurants under the mentorship of Adenah Bayoh, AA’99, BS’01 (Metro). His IHOP has 50 employees, all of whom live in the neighborhood.
Dennis Zubrizi, MAS, MS’16 (Metro), joined the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office as a detective. Previously, he was with the Denville Police Department. Zubrizi is an instructor at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, N.Y., and at Sussex County Community College, Newton, N.J.

Amanda “Ayee” Andrades, BA (Metro), is head coach of the varsity women’s basketball team at Mooresville High School in North Carolina. A former Knights women’s basketball player, she played professionally in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional Feminino in Puerto Rico. Andrades previously coached boys teams in the Best of Both Worlds basketball league.
Charles Brooks, BA (Metro), was promoted to lieutenant in the Manchester Township (N.J.) Police Department. He has received two Chiefs Awards, a Lifesaving Award and an Exceptional Duty Award.

Nicole Melleby, MFA (Flor), was on GO Magazine’s list of “100 Women We Love: Class of 2024.” She is the author of queer-centric middle-grade books Hurricane Season; How to Become a Planet; Camp QUILTBAG; and the House on Sunrise Lagoon series. Melleby also wrote the picture book, Sunny and Oswaldo. Melleby is an adjunct instructor at FDU.

Darius Stokes, MSA (Metro), was named assistant basketball coach at Elon University in North Carolina. He was previously assistant coach at the United States Military Academy, West Point. At FDU, he was an assistant coach and, previously, director of basketball operations.
Marjorie West-Lawrence, MSN (Metro), lecturer of nursing, is a Jonas Scholar for the Jonas Nursing program’s 2024–26 cohort. She was selected for her “passion for teaching, academic excellence and research prowess.”

Anthony Ausiello, MFA (Flor), talked about his book, Brooklyn’76, and did a book signing in September 2024 at The BookMark Shoppe in Brooklyn, N.Y. He also appeared at the Brooklyn Book Festival, the Louisville Book Festival and the Asbury Book Cooperative. Brooklyn’76 was published in February 2024 by South Allen Street Press, N.Y.C.

Edward Davies, BA, MSA’20 (Metro), and Alexis Ballistreri, BA’21, MAT’22 (Flor), were married on October 13, 2024, at The Hamilton Manor (N.J.). Davies is assistant director of alumni affinity and athletics, University advancement, at FDU’s Metropolitan Campus. Ballistreri is a special-education resources teacher for second- and third-graders in Butler (N.J.).

Cameron Stinchfield, MSM (Metro), is now the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at Marywood University, Scranton, Pa. Previously, he was a cross country and track and field graduate assistant coach for the FDU Knights.

In Memoriam
Leo Rogers died on October 3, 2024, at age 88. After a career at Howard Savings Bank, where he eventually became president, he led the Rothman Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies — now the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship — for more than a decade, starting in 1989. He spent a year as acting director of the Silberman College of Business and ran the Institute’s Family Business Forum, even into his retirement in 2003. He was honored at the Institute’s 25th anniversary celebration in 2014. Rogers is survived by his wife of 53 years Carole Rogers; his sister Geraldine; his sons and their families: Douglas Rogers, Melanie Boyd and Evan and Caden Rodems-Boyd; and Matthew Rogers, Liz Burkhart and Theo, Carter and Owen Rogers; along with several nieces and nephews.
Daniel Twomey, professor emeritus of management, died at age 88 on July 24, 2024. Hired in 1988 as professor of management and chair of the management and marketing department for the Rutherford and Teaneck (now Metropolitan) campuses, he taught for more than 20 years, retiring in 2010. He was co-founder of FDU’s Institute for Sustainable Enterprise and was its director for 16 years. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching in 2009. Twomey and his wife Rosemarie, professor emerita of law, created and taught an FDU study-abroad program in Costa Rica. Twomey is survived by Rosemarie; children Michael, Teresa Harris, Matthew and Luke; twin brother Thomas Twomey; sister Hannah Emhof; sister-in-law Ella Twomey; grandchildren Ariana, Elizabeth and Katherine Harris and Julia, Georgia and Sonia Twomey; and many nieces and nephews.
Richard Wisch, retired associate dean of Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies, died on November 11, 2024, at age 81. Wisch came to FDU in 1981 as an associate professor of hotel management. In June 1982, he was inducted into the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a world-renowned culinary society that later made its home at the Florham Campus. In 2003, he became associate dean of the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (now the International School of Hospitality, Sports, and Tourism Management) and led the school through a period of growth and distinction. In recognition, the Dr. Richard Wisch Educator of the Year Award for faculty in the school was named for him. Wisch retired in December 2012 after more than 30 years at FDU.
