Department of Communication

"Of all things, communication is the most wonderful"
— John Dewey

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Communication is an interdisciplinary liberal arts major that prepares students for a wide range of communication careers as well as for advanced study. Course requirements in media studies, theory, research, international communication, and writing introduce students to major areas of study and practice.

The degree is offered through the Department of Communication in the Becton College of Arts and Sciences at the University’s Florham and Metropolitan Campuses.

The major culminates in an internship in a communication-related position where students acquire real-world experience. The combination of required and elective courses allows students to build areas of specialization in a wide range of interests including communication theory, public relations, advertising, digital media, or journalism.

Graduates of the program are employed throughout the northeast in a variety of corporations as editors, writers, technical writers, marketing representatives, public relations specialists, assistant producers, and more. Many students have gone into teaching and the law.

“The Department of Communication prepares today’s students for the challenges of tomorrow.  Students can select their focus in one of our campus concentrations. Florham campus offers concentrations in multimedia journalism, public relations, social media, and human communication. The Metropolitan campus offers concentrations in advertising and social media.

The Communication Department is pleased to be able to offer its best and brightest students membership in Lambda Pi Eta, the student honor society of the National Communication Association.
