Chosen Name Policy, Metro Campus
Fairleigh Dickinson University recognizes that some students use a first name which differs from their legal name (a chosen name). In recognition of these students, the University has created a process where these students can have their chosen first name displayed on academic rosters and on Webcampus in order to facilitate a safe and welcoming environment.
Students will also have the opportunity to identify the name they prefer printed on their degree at the time they declare for graduation.
Updating your Chosen Name
Students can complete the chosen name request form. The form will then be reviewed by the University Records Office and the record will be updated, except in the following circumstances:
- The requested name is disparaging, harmful, or salacious.
- The requested name is an attempt to avoid legal responsibilities.
Limitations to the Chosen Name Policy
If a student’s chosen name differs from their legal name, their chosen name can presently be updated on academic rosters and in the university learning management system (Webcampus).
A student’s legal name will still appear in records and systems which presently require the use of a legal name, including:
- Academic transcripts
- Fairleigh 1Card
- Financial Aid and Enrollment Services documents and systems
- Disciplinary records
- Official University correspondence
