MHMS Admission (Vancouver)

Candidates for admission to the Master of Hospitality Management Studies degree program could be managers, business owners or educators or hold other professional positions related to the hospitality industry. The credentials required for admission as a matriculated student include the following:

Admission Requirements

1. Graduated from an accredited 4-year bachelor’s degree program or equivalent.

3-year degrees from India are considered equivalent to a 4-year degree if: 

  • The applicant’s overall standing in degree is 1st Class/Division, AND 
  • The awarding institutions have been accredited by India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of A or better http://www.naac.gov.in/ OR The awarding institution is designated an Institution of National Importance, such as the Indian Institute of Technology. 

2. Maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (“B-“)  or equivalent in their undergraduate studies.

3. Demonstrated proficiency, both written and verbal of the English Language (for international students whose first language is not English or who did not complete their degrees in US or Canada).

4. Industry work experience preferred (applicants without industry work experience may be required to take foundation courses HRTM 6100 and HRTM 6200 upon evaluation).

Spring (January) term – August 31

Required Documents

Copies of the documents must be submitted together with the on-line application.

  1. Attested or official transcripts, academic records, diplomas, national examination results, certificates or degrees received from all post-secondary institutions, universities and/or professional schools. If the documents are not in English, certified translation is required.
  2. Answers to 3 essay questions outlining your personal interests and career goals. You will add these answers when filling out the online application form.
    • Question 1 How do you think this Graduate Degree can help you achieve your career goals? (400 or more words)
    • Question 2 Please describe your greatest achievement. (up to 200 words)
    • Question 3 What motivates and inspires you? (up to 200 words)
    • FDU uses the answers to these questions to evaluate if you are the right fit for the program. We also use it to evaluate your writing skills. Please write a genuine response to each of the question.
  3. Proof of English Proficiency if your first language is not English or you did not complete your degree in US or Canada. For more details, please refer to English Proficiency page.  
  4. Copy of information page in your valid passport.
  5. Resume or portfolio
  6. Interview with a graduate program adviser may be required.

Admission Procedures

Admission to the MHMS program is competitive and is based on the “rolling” admission model.

Applications are evaluated by both Admissions team and the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

An interview with the Program Advisor may be required before the decision on admission can be made. Admissions team will notify applicants and schedule the interview if needed.

The Assistant Director of Enrollment Management for this program will notify applicants and schedule the interview if needed.

Direct Admission 

MHMS students who meet the academic requirements and have an English proficiency test score equivalent to IELTS 6.5 across all bands are placed into the MHMS program without further testing.  

Students who have an equivalent overall IELTS of 6.5 or higher with no band below 6.0, will test and those scoring between 11 and 14 will be enrolled in EPS 5099 in addition to one 3-credit MHMS academic course, while those scoring 15 or higher will be enrolled in three 3-credit MHMS academic courses. 

*Students submitting scores from TOEFL Home Edition, PTE Academic Online, or iTEP will be required to take the English Placement Test. 

Conditional Admission 

FDU offers Conditional Acceptance to students who meet the university’s academic criteria outlined in the Admissions requirement section but require additional training in academic English before joining FDU’s degree programs. Students who don’t meet the established entry points indicated on the English Proficiency table can be conditionally admitted through the English Pathway Program. Students taking an ESL Pathway certificate are conditionally admitted and must complete the ESL pathway program before registering at FDU. 

Upon completion of a pathway program, MHMS students will be enrolled in EPS 5099 in the first term.  

Applicants must provide a Letter of Acceptance from the ESL pathway program before receiving a Letter of Acceptance from FDU.
