Office of the General Counsel
Who We Are
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) acts as the primary advocate to protect the institution against current and future legal issues and obstacles. The OGC provides legal advice and coordinates legal representation for the University as a whole. The General Counsel is the University’s attorney.
A service-oriented office, the OGC advises the Trustees, President, administrators, faculty and staff on relevant statutory laws, court decisions, and administrative regulations of the state and federal government necessary for the performance of their responsibilities.
As the University’s in-house attorney, the General Counsel advises, both in a proactive and responsive manner, on matters that could have legal implications for the University, its contractual obligations, governance, policies and procedures.
Adopting the philosophy that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, the OGC believes deeply in the proactive practice of law and therefore strongly encourages all members of the Fairleigh Dickinson community to consult with the OGC before issues arise or as soon as possible thereafter.
The General Counsel will select outside counsel when necessary and coordinates all services rendered by outside counsel. Similarly, all communications from outside attorneys should be referred to the OGC.
The General Counsel also serves as Secretary of the Board of Trustees, working with the Board to carry out their duties and obligations in conformance with its bylaws and the common law.
